So, as it turns out, it is actually possible for a live action video game movie to be worth watching. In the case of Detective Pikachu, this mostly true due to the great design and CGI work on the Pokemon, as well as Ryan Reynolds’ spirited performance as series mascot Pikachu. While this story often feels like it is going through the motions of your standard, non-challenging children’s movie, there are some glimpses insight found in the central friendship between our protagonists. And did I mention they actually pulled off the challenging feat of translating anime designs into real life? If that isn’t something worth celebrating, then I don’t know what is.
