Cyberpunk stories tend to follow hackers, rogues, and malcontents who find themselves at odds with the powers that be in a grim dystopian world. While VA-11 HALL-A certainly takes place in this type of setting, refreshingly, it doesn’t follow the typical trajectory of this kind of story. Instead, you play as a bartender and must do your best to help drown out your client’s woes through good conversations and cocktails. While its nature as a visual novel may throw some players off, VA-11 HALL-A is not only one of the best VNs I’ve ever played but is also one of the best examples of character writing in recent memory. For fans of storytelling in games, it is a must-play.
